The country is in constant crisis! Import and export goods transport is congested again! Port cargo volume has plummeted!

Some time ago, due to the continuous protests in Bangladesh, its supply chain was in a state of extreme chaos, exports were almost forced to stop, Chittagong cargo backlog, congestion and delays were serious. Operations in Chittagong began to resume gradually after the local curfew was lifted and Internet services resumed.

However, the recent flood crisis has once again made the transportation of imports and exports in Bangladesh difficult.

Bangladesh's latest official data shows that as of August 25 local time, floods in Bangladesh have affected more than 5.2 million people, 20 people lost their lives due to floods.

Many parts of the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway, a major freight route from Dhaka to Chittagong, were inundated due to persistent rains in the southeast and flooding from India's Tripura state.

Trucks laden with export cargoes from Dhaka and elsewhere have encountered obstacles, detour and delays en route to Chittagong, Bangladesh's main seaport. The water on highways was reported to be up to waist-deep in some places, causing a 40-kilometer-long traffic jam.

Truck driver Masud Rana told the media that he set off from Chittagong on the afternoon of August 22 but got stuck in a traffic jam after travelling only 100km.

Ruhul Amin Sikder, secretary general of the Bangladesh Inland Container Yards Association, said Chittagong Inland Yards had received 2,100 trucks carrying export cargoes in the past 24 hours, 1,000 fewer than the previous day.

He added: "We usually receive about 3,500 trucks a day. Every day, about 900 trucks would take out imported goods from the yard, but in the last 24 hours, only about 630 trucks have left."

According to industry sources, to address the congestion in Chittagong due to the political unrest, some shipping companies have deployed extra vessels to transport their stranded export cargoes in Chittagong. Chittagong is gradually returning to normal operations and container traffic has increased recently.

Maersk operates four weekly intra-Asian routes from Bangladesh, including the newly added SH3 service. PIL and SeaLead have also recently announced the joint launch of a new weekly intra-Asian route from Chittagong. The route will start at the end of this month and will call on Ningbo, Shanghai, Shekou and Chittagong.

However, due to the current traffic congestion caused by floods, the normal transportation of import and export goods in Chittagong has been hindered again, and some goods may face delays. Freight forwarders with shipping plans also need to continue to pay close attention to port dynamics and timely adjust transportation plans according to the latest situation.
