Taiwan's Sanofao announces 2024 revenue

Taiwan's three major shipping companies, Evergreen Shipping, Yangming Shipping and Wanhai Shipping, have recently announced that their revenue in December 2024 and the full year of 2024 has achieved substantial growth.

Evergreen Shipping achieved revenue of NT $38.14 billion (about US $1.16 billion) in December 2024, an increase of 61.4%. Revenue for the full year 2024 was NT $463.51 billion (about US $14.06 billion), up 67.5% year-on-year.

For revenue growth, Evergreen Shipping said that the recent market continues to be affected by geopolitical changes, and due to the Lunar New Year earlier than in previous years, the cargo volume in December 2024 has increased, driving freight costs to rise, and revenue has grown simultaneously. Evergreen Shipping further said that it will pay close attention to the changes in the international situation, timely adjust the fleet and route configuration, and provide stable and high-quality route network services.

Another liner company, Yangming Shipping, achieved revenue of NT $17.25 billion (about US $520 million) in December 2024, up 62.0% year-on-year; Revenue for the full year 2024 was NT $222.95 billion (about US $6.76 billion), up 58.4% year on year.

Yangming Shipping analysis said that the eurozone manufacturing activity continued to shrink in December 2024, showing that the overall economic pressure in Europe is heavy. Although the U.S. manufacturing sector is in a state of contraction, new orders and production indicators increased, boosting sentiment. China, on the other hand, has benefited from equipment renewal and trade-in policies, and its manufacturing sector has continued to expand.

Yang Ming Shipping also believes that although the world has entered the interest rate reduction cycle, but trade conflicts, protectionism, geopolitical tensions and other challenges still remain, need to be faced with caution. However, with the Lunar New Year approaching and the tariffs imposed by the new US administration still uncertain, short-term demand remains solid.

In addition, Wanhai Shipping achieved revenue of NT $14.39 billion (about US $440 million) in December 2024, an increase of 72.2%. Revenue for the full year 2024 was NT $161.87 billion (about US $4.91 billion), up 61.5% year-on-year.

Looking ahead to the first quarter of 2025, Wanhai Shipping said that the shipping industry is still plagued by tight supply chains, as the trend of larger ships causes port congestion and ship turnover declines. According to the latest Global Ports Weekly report, there is 2.65 million TEU of shipping capacity waiting to enter ports at port anchorages, accounting for about 8.5% of the total global fleet capacity, indicating that congestion is still serious and supporting market freight rates.

Wan Hai Shipping stressed that factors such as the uncertainty of the US tariff policy and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to cause supply chain challenges, and the company will maintain operational flexibility and review route configuration and market changes in real time to optimize operating results.
