Cma CGM announces delay! Several US peak season surcharges are involved
French shipping company CMA CGM recently announced surcharge updates on three of its routes to the United States, including the postponement of two surcharges.
From January 15 to January 18, the implementation of the Peak Season surcharge (PSS05) for all containers from the Indian Subcontinent, Middle East Gulf, Red Sea and Egypt to the eastern and Gulf Coast of the United States has been postponed for the fourth time.
The CMA CGM has also delayed the imposition of the same $1,000 surcharge (PSS06) on all shipments from the Indian subcontinent, Middle East Gulf, Red Sea and Egypt to U.S. Eastern and Gulf Coast ports from Jan. 18 to Feb. 1.
Starting Feb. 15, a surcharge of $1,200 will also apply to all shipments from the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East Gulf, the Red Sea and Egypt to the eastern and Gulf coasts of the United States, including very large cargoes but excluding bulk cargoes.
The company did not provide further details, but the surcharge was announced on Jan. 8, the same day that the United States East Terminal's labor and management negotiated an agreement.
The extra charges in the Middle East come as CMA CGM Ships is the only global container shipping line to continue operating in the Red Sea amid Houthi attacks on shipping in Yemen. Other shipping companies are redirecting their routes around the Horn of Africa, connecting Asia with Europe, the Mediterranean and the United States, making longer and more expensive journeys.
The increased costs also reflect a surge in early shipments by importers ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, which begins on January 29, when Asian factories are closed for several weeks.
Restructured ocean line alliances and ship sharing agreements will be deployed in February, a transition that could lead to delays and congestion.
The surcharge will remain in effect until further notice, CMA CGM said.
In addition, starting Jan. 18, CMA CGM will impose a peak season surcharge of $1,300 to $2,500 on containers shipped from the Mediterranean to ports in the eastern United States and Gulf Coast.
