Shanghai Port achieves first batch refueling of domestically produced green methanol

Shanghai Port achieves first batch refueling of domestically produced green methanol

On March 29, 2025, the methanol bunkering ship "Haigang Zhiyuan" under the Shanghai Port Group Energy Company (hereinafter referred to as "Shanghai Port Energy") will carry out simultaneous bunkering operations for the Korean "HMM Green" at the Yangshan Phase IV Automated Terminal, that is, container loading and unloading and methanol fuel bunkering will be carried out simultaneously. This operation is expected to bunker about 2,900 tons of green methanol.

"Haigang Zhiyuan" is currently the largest methanol bunkering ship in operation in my country. In April 2024, it pioneered the bunkering of green methanol fuel for international container ships in my country's ports at the Yangshan Port Area of Shanghai Port. The difference is that this bunkering is not only larger in terms of bunkering volume, but also uses domestically produced green methanol, which means that Shanghai Port has realized the ability to supply services for the entire industrial chain of domestically produced green methanol, and it also marks that my country's ports have taken a historic step in bunkering domestically produced green methanol for international ships.

What is green methanol? According to the standards of the International Renewable Energy Agency, methanol can only be identified as green methanol when the raw materials are renewable raw materials and the carbon footprint meets the requirements. The domestically produced green methanol added this time was produced in Inner Mongolia and transported to Shanghai Port by land and sea. It meets ISCC-EU certification and has a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas GHG emissions.

According to statistics from the International Maritime Organization, global shipping emits about 1 billion tons of greenhouse gases each year, accounting for 13% of the emissions in the transportation industry, making it a veritable "carbon emitter". Under the global "dual carbon" goal, the latest "Strategy for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Ships" clearly states that by 2030, greenhouse gas emissions from the global shipping industry will be reduced by at least 20% compared to 2008, and by at least 70% by 2040.

Whether from the perspective of safety, technological maturity, or large-scale production, green methanol is considered one of the better choices in the shipping industry. The "HMM Green" ship this time is one of the 9,000TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships newly built by Hanshin Shipping Co., Ltd. in South Korea. As a world-renowned shipping company, Hanxin Shipping has been committed to promoting the green development of the shipping industry and plans to gradually realize the low-carbon and green transformation of the fleet in the next 10 years. The choice of refueling green methanol fuel in Shanghai Port is also an important measure for HMM Shipping Company to practice the concept of green shipping.

"We are very honored to work with HMM to promote this milestone project." Luo Wenbin, executive director and general manager of Shanghai Port Energy, said, "This is not only an important step in promoting the construction of my country's green methanol industry chain, but also provides a reliable "Chinese solution" for the energy transformation and sustainable development of the shipping industry."

For a long time, Shanghai Port Energy, as the investment and operation entity of the Shanghai Port Green Energy Center, has relied on the location advantages of Shanghai Port and the strong route network aggregation to promote the green transformation of shipping energy. In this refueling practice, Shanghai Port Energy played the collaborative advantages of the integrated management platform of the sector. Its three companies, Shanghai Port Zhiyuan, Yangshan Shengang and Shanghai Port Energy Service, relied on the "three-in-one" linkage mechanism to build a full-chain methanol fuel supply system for terminal, storage and transportation, and refueling operations, achieving seamless connection and efficient operation of all links. At the same time, Yangshan Customs under Shanghai Customs actively promoted the integration of the "two warehouses in one" function of Yangshan Shengang warehousing to expand the pilot scope. By giving designated storage tanks the functions of bonded warehouses and export supervision warehouses, the fuel circulation link was effectively simplified and the operation efficiency was significantly improved.

Sunny worldwide logistics  have more than 26 years of freight forwarding history, and over half of staffs working in Sunny about 5-13years. Sunny Worldwide Logistics is not a small freight forwarding workshop, owning 1800 square meters A-class office. Highly attention on the shipment more than the owner, site supervising and real-time tracking feedback.

Industry insiders believe that the batch refueling of domestic green methanol not only reflects the comprehensive strength of Shanghai Port Energy in the fields of storage, transportation and refueling, but also is an important measure for Shanghai Port to accelerate the filling of the shortcomings of high-end shipping services, and provide strong impetus for the overall leap of Shanghai International Shipping Center.

In the next stage, Shanghai Port Energy will continue to deepen the collaborative cooperation with upstream and downstream enterprises in the industrial chain, strive to build Shanghai Port into a global shipping "green gas station", and transform the low-carbon development concept into quantifiable emission reduction benefits through the innovative practice of large-scale refueling of domestic green methanol. At the same time, it will continue to work hard to provide more attractive diversified customized energy services for international shipping companies, and make new and greater contributions to the transformation of the global shipping industry to a zero-carbon future.
