MSC, Hapag-Lloyd launch more separate services ahead of alliance change
According to Alphaliner's report, MSC and Hapag-Lloyd have already started building up their operational services as both shipping lines prepare to leave their current alliance.
MSC, which will be spun off from its 2M partner Maersk, has been operating separate routes on Asia-North America and Far East-Europe routes.
Following the launch of two additional standalone services in July, MSC's non-2M fleet capacity on its large Asia-North America and Far East-Europe routes now stands at 733,000 TEUs, or 33.2% of its total trading capacity.
On the Asia-Europe route, Mediterranean currently operates four routes to Northern Europe (2M Lion, 2M Griffin, Sentosa-Swan and Britannia) and three routes to the Mediterranean (2M Jade, 2M Tiger and the standalone Dragon). .
The capacity of MSC in the independent cycle will be further increased in the coming weeks. The new China-South Korea-Long Beach "Mustang" route only began operations on July 20, meaning its fleet is not yet fully staffed. MSC also opened the "Liberty" loop between the Far East and the East Coast of the United States on August 8.
Once all vessels are in place, the Swiss-Italian operator's stand-alone capacity on Asia-Europe and Trans-Pacific routes will grow to 921,000 TEUs, increasing its non-alliance share on these routes to 38.4 percent.
Currently, MSC has a capacity of 2.4 million TEUs on two routes, while Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd will form a Gemini partnership in February 2025, which will have 2.6 million TEUs.
Hapag-lloyd is also starting to increase market share outside the alliance, which it will leave to form Gemini. 15.4% of its non-alliance capacity is linked to the June 2024 launch of the Far East-Northern Europe independent China-Germany Express Line (CGX). The German shipping company also currently offers five 15,440 TEU vessels for the AA7 Asia-US East Coast route, which is jointly operated with Wan Hai.
Currently, Hapag-Lloyd (15.4%) and HMM(28.3%) are the only two alliance members that operate the majority of their ship capacity outside of East-West routes, but this is expected to change once the 2M partnership ends and Hapag-Lloyd enters the Gemini partnership with Maersk.
