Indian ports are facing severe congestion
India's Nhava Sheva port is facing severe congestion due to a surge in cargo volumes and erratic shipping schedules. APM's GTI terminal and DP World's NSCIT terminal were particularly severe, causing delays in the entry and exit of container trucks and affecting import and export cycles. Container freight stations complain of customs clearance difficulties, and high inventory levels exacerbate operational pressure. At the same time, Mundra Port also faced efficiency issues, and improving port operations and cross-departmental collaboration became a top priority.
According to the latest news, the JNPT terminal in Nava Sheva Port is suffering from serious congestion problems, mainly due to the sharp increase in cargo volume and continued instability of shipping schedules. Container truck drivers are experiencing significantly longer delays in moving in and out of container areas, resulting in chaotic pick-up and unloading processes, particularly in the past few weeks.
Congestion at APM Terminal's Gateway India Terminal (GTI) and DP World-operated Nava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSCIT) is particularly severe and has become the focus of industry concern. The Nava Sheva Container Operators Association (NSCOWA) made it clear in an official notice that the ongoing congestion has resulted in an average delay of six to eight hours for each import/export and empty container crossing the NSICT and GTI terminals, severely disrupting the overall import/export cycle.
NSCOWA, which represents the local container trailer industry, stresses that the delays are not the fault of its member carriers, but are the result of a combination of factors. While the association, together with other stakeholders, has been active in keeping the industry informed through daily traffic consultations, delays have had a significant impact on importers' delivery schedules.
In addition, owners of container freight stations (CFS) in Nawa Sheva Port have also complained that they are having difficulty in smoothly clearing cargoes from the terminals, a predicament that undoubtedly adds to the financial burden of shippers. The Container Freight Stations Association of India (CFSAI) expressed great concern, noting that all port terminals reported high inventory levels, further aggravating the overall operating pressure.
CFSAI noted that despite efforts by the association and various parties to raise industry awareness through daily traffic warnings, the delays caused by congestion are still affecting the import and export process across the board, not only extending the turnaround time of trailers, but also directly affecting the final delivery to importers and the efficiency of the connection between exports and terminals.
Carrier officials point out that addressing this issue will require greater efforts at port and terminal level in cargo flow planning and coordination. Industry sources further analyzed that the complexity of long-distance transport in Southern Africa and the delays in the previous port of call, resulting in frequent changes in the estimated time of arrival (ETA), which poses a huge challenge for the major terminal operators in arranging the vessel berthing window.
It is important to note that the congestion problem is not unique to Nava Sheva Port. Mundra Port is also facing complaints from container rail companies over a slowdown in train turnover, and the two ports together handle the vast majority of India's container freight. Therefore, to improve the efficiency of port operation and strengthen cross-departmental collaboration has become a top priority.
