MSC will operate a terminal in Vietnam
Haiphong Port Co., Ltd. and TIL, a terminal operator owned by MSC, have jointly established TIL Haiphong International Port Co., Ltd. to operate International Container Terminals 3 and 4 of Haiphong Gateway International Port in Lach Huyen, Haiphong.
Established on December 20, the joint venture is 51% owned by Haiphong Port Corporation and 49% by TIL. Haiphong Port is the largest port in northern Vietnam and the gateway to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. There are nearly 40 wharves in each port area and it is the second largest commercial port in Vietnam. Among them, the Lixian port area belongs to the deep-water port, the total area of the deep-water port is 2000 hectares, and the total length of the port shoreline is 55 kilometers. In 2018, No. 1 and No. 2 wharfs in Lixian Port District were completed and put into operation. Piers 3 and 4 were completed in May this year.
With a total investment of nearly US $300 million, the Terminal 3 and 4 projects include two main berths with a 750-meter shoreline, a barge berth with a 150-meter shoreline, storage yards, roads, auxiliary works and synchronous technology infrastructure, which can berth ships of 8,000 to 14,000 TEU (equivalent to 100,000 to 160,000 DWT) and an annual throughput of 1.1 million TEU. These piers will be equipped with six shore Bridges and 24 yard Bridges, some of which are already in place.
In July this year, Haiphong Port Corporation signed a joint venture agreement with TIL to jointly develop and operate Terminals 3 and 4. In order to ensure sufficient manpower, the joint venture also announced the recruitment of workers, the average monthly salary of 23 million VND (about 6600 yuan), in 2023, the average monthly income of Vietnamese workers will reach 7.1 million VND (about 2,176 yuan).
It is learnt that MSC has frequently invested in terminal projects in recent years, including the acquisition of a minority stake in HHLA, the largest operator of the Port of Hamburg, the acquisition of Bollore Africa Logistics, the investment in Vietnam's Quaye International transit port, the investment in Denmark's Aarhus port container terminal, investment in India's greenfield port of Wadwan and so on. According to Delury data, in 2023, MSC's terminals completed equity throughput of 42.3 million TEU, ranking 7th among container terminal operators in the world.
