European Freight: Classification Standards and Transportation Methods for Oversized and Heavy Cargo

Europe consists of many countries, and in international transportation there is no globally unified legal definition or fixed standard for “oversized, overweight, or large cargo.” In industry practice, these are generally defined as shipments that exceed the normal limits of standard containers or air cargo capacity.

The reference standards are as follows:

Oversized & Overweight Cargo in International Air Freight (Express & Cargo) Standards

Different carriers have different standards. Common thresholds that trigger “oversized cargo” surcharges or special handling include:

Before shipping, you should always consult the staff at Sunny Worldwide Logistics to confirm whether your cargo is classified as oversized or overweight.

  • FedEx:
Any single side exceeds 243 cm, or the total size (Length + Girth = width × 2 + height × 2) exceeds 330 cm.
  • UPS:
Any longest side ≥ 120 cm, and the second longest side ≥ 75 cm, while actual weight is > 31 kg, may be treated as oversized.
  • DHL:
Any single side > 120 cm, or single piece weight > 70 kg, is generally considered oversized/overweight and requires special handling.
  • Air cargo pallet/aircraft limits:
The maximum size of main deck pallets is generally around 318 cm × 244 cm × 163 cm. Anything beyond this requires bulk cargo hold transportation. There is no absolute unified standard, and advance booking confirmation is required.
The longest dimension for commonly used passenger aircraft cargo is about 76 meters, so in most cases your oversized cargo can still be transported—however, you must contact us in advance for confirmation.

Oversized & Heavy Cargo Standards in International Sea Freight (Europe)

European sea freight also has no fixed numerical threshold for “oversized cargo.” Classification is mainly based on vessel loading capacity and container specifications:

  • Standard maximum limits:
The internal maximum dimensions of a 40HQ container are approximately:
Length 12 meters, Width 2.3 meters, Height 2.7 meters.
Any cargo exceeding these dimensions is considered oversized.
  • Industry practice:
Cargo exceeding 150 tons per single piece, or cargo that cannot be handled by standard lifting equipment / requires special lashing and securing, is generally classified as heavy-lift cargo (Breakbulk / OOG).
  • Classification characteristics:
Includes over-length, over-width, over-height, and overweight cargo, which require special equipment such as open-top containers, flat rack containers, or breakbulk vessels.
