Mexico to raise tariffs on Chinese goods? China's statement!

According to Reuters, Bloomberg reported that US Treasury Secretary Bessant claimed on February 28 local time that Mexico has proposed to impose tariffs equivalent to US tariffs on China, and he called on Canada to follow the relevant measures. The Chinese Embassy in the United States said that pressure, coercion and threats are not the right way to deal with China, and mutual respect is the basic premise.

Eastern time on February 4, the United States has imposed a 10% tariff on Chinese imports. A few days ago, the United States again threatened to impose another 10% tariff on Chinese imports from March 4. If implemented, it would mean a 20 percent tariff on Chinese imports.

It is understood that US President Trump signed an executive order on February 1, imposing a 25% tariff on goods imported from Mexico and Canada, including a 10% tax increase on Canadian energy products. On February 3, Trump announced a 30-day suspension of the tariffs imposed on the two countries. On February 27, Trump said on the social platform that the tariff measures on Mexico and Canada will still be implemented on March 4.

Bloomberg reported that in the above context, Mexico's move to consider tariffs on China may be a response to avoid the US imposing 25% tariffs on the country's products. The report also cited sources as saying that the target of Mexico's proposed tariffs on China will focus on automobiles and auto parts.

The Mexican and Canadian governments did not immediately respond to requests for comment, Reuters said. Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in the United States, told the media in a statement that the unilateral imposition of tariffs by the United States is a serious violation of World Trade Organization rules and harms the interests of China, the United States and the world.

"Pressure, coercion and threats are not the right way to deal with China. On the contrary, mutual respect is the basic premise." "We urge the U.S. side to correct its mistakes and return to the right track of addressing each other's concerns through equal consultation," the statement said.

Frequent tariff threats by the new US administration have sparked opposition, with some of America's trading partners saying they would consider countermeasures.

On February 27, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada does not want a trade war with the United States, but if the United States imposes tariffs on Canadian goods on March 4, Canada "will respond immediately and extremely strongly."

At the regular press conference of the Chinese Foreign Ministry on February 28, spokesman Lin Jian said that the United States once again threatened to impose tariffs on Chinese imports to the United States under the pretext of fentanyl. China is strongly dissatisfied with this and resolutely opposes it, and will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard its legitimate interests.

"China has repeatedly stated that no one will win a trade war or a tariff war." Lin Jian said that the unilateral imposition of tariffs by the United States seriously violates WTO rules and harms the interests of the two countries and the whole world. China has one of the strictest and most thorough drug control policies in the world. Fentanyl is America's problem. China and the US have carried out extensive and in-depth anti-drug cooperation and achieved remarkable results, which is obvious to all. People from all walks of life in the US have expressed their thanks to the Chinese side many times. The US, using the fentanyl issue to blackmail and pressure tariffs, is bent on biting the hand that feeds it, which will not solve its own concerns and will only backfire.
