MSC announces: Upgrade of independent east-west transport network

On 29 November, Mediterranean Shipping (MSC) announced an upgrade to its east-west independent transport network that will optimise connectivity from Asia to Europe, the US and Canada by adding additional ports.

MSC said the upgrade will provide customers with more options for direct port pairing connections while guaranteeing competitive transit times.

MSC's independent east-west transport network will be officially launched in February 2025, with the following adjustments for routes from Asia to Europe, the United States and Canada:

MUSTANG route services

MUSTANG service, which connects Asia to the northwestern United States and Canada, will be integrated into the east-west network. The new port order is: Xiamen - Yantian - Ningbo - Shanghai - Busan - Seattle - Vancouver - Portland - Busan.

PEARL and CHINOOK services

Trade connectivity from Asia to the United States and Canada will be enhanced through the addition of Vietnam's Tau Tau and Haiphong.

LION, DRAGON and SWAN-SENTOSA services

The trade network between Asia and Europe will be upgraded through the addition of Nansha. In addition, SWAN-SENTOSA will add Shiota to the westbound route and will direct to Japan via Yokohama, replacing the previous Busan route.

ORIENT and LONESTAR services

ORIENT, which connects the west coast of the US to Asia, and LONESTAR, which connects the east coast of the US to Asia, will add to Busan's westbound connection.

JADE Service

The JADE route, which connects Asia and Europe, will stop at Vizingam, India, before heading to the Mediterranean.

DRAGON Service

The call order between Colombo and Wijnjam will be rescheduled on the eastbound segment.

BRITANNIA and AMERICA services

The BRITANNIA route, which connects Asian trade with northern Europe, and AMERICA's eastbound route back to Asia from the east coast of the US, will be outpaced by Glenpoe.

ALBATROS route service

Two docking points will be added in the UK - the Port of Felixstowe and the Port of London.

MSC said that the East West network update for 2025 and its options announced above will not affect the deployment of capacity on any other routes MSC offers worldwide.

In addition to its existing export services to Asia, MSC's independent east-west transport network will provide inter-continental trade connectivity through a series of circular, competitive transit times and frequent direct port calls.
