Container trade between Asia and Europe showed a downward trend

 

According to data from the Japan Maritime Center (JMC) based on Container Trade Statistics (CTS), Asian container exports to Europe reached 1.42 million TEUs in September.

 

According to the Japan International Freight Forwarders Association (JIFFA), the figure was down slightly by 0.3 percent year-on-year, the first decline in 19 months. However, exports remained stable compared to the previous month, which was strong.

 

From January to September, Asia exported a record 13.39 million TEUs to Europe, up 6.8 percent year-on-year. Exports in the third quarter (July-September) totaled 4.64 million TEUs, also a record high.

 

​ Exports from other Northeast Asian economies fell sharply by 19% to 129,018 TEUs, while Southeast Asia grew strongly by 11.2% to 197,418 TEUs.

 

By destination, Northern Europe received 908,409 TEUs, up 4.3%; Western Mediterranean received 252,314 TEUs, down 0.9%; The Eastern Mediterranean route was down 13.3% to 254,687 TEUs.

On the import side, Asia imported 479,015 TEUs of containers from Europe in September, down 10.9% from a year earlier and down for the third consecutive month. Cumulative imports in January-September were 4.72 million teu, down 0.9 percent, and in the third quarter (July-September) cumulative imports were 1.53 million teu, down 3.7 percent.

 

By origin, imports from Northern Europe decreased by 11.6% to 333,610 TEUs; Western Mediterranean route decreased 0.8% to 74,520 TEUs; Imports from the Eastern Mediterranean fell 16.6% to 70,885 TEUs.

 

By destination, Chinese imports fell sharply by 17.3% to 224,985 TEUs, leading to an overall decline in trade. Imports to other Northeast Asian economies rose 0.5 percent to 111,833 TEUs, while imports to Southeast Asia fell 7.9 percent to 142,195 TEUs.
