Two of America's biggest ports have their busiest seasons

 

 

The Port of Los Angeles (LA) and the Port of Long Beach (LB), the two largest ports in the United States, have released data for September this year.

 

The Port of Los Angeles handled 955,000 TEU of containers in September

 

Container throughput at the Port of Los Angeles reached 955,000 TEU in September, up 27.6% from a year earlier. Among them, imported heavy containers increased by 26.8% to 498,000 TEU, while exported heavy containers decreased by 4.9% to 115,000 TEU. In addition, the number of empty containers passing through the Port of Los Angeles increased 45.5 percent to 342,000 TEU.

 

In the first nine months of 2024, container throughput at the Port of Los Angeles reached 7.586 million TEU, an increase of 18.6% over the same period last year.

 

In particular, the Port of Los Angeles handled 2.855 million TEU of containers in the third quarter, making it the busiest quarter on record for the port.

 

The Port of Long Beach handled 829,000 TEU in September

 

"Peak season" and holiday consumer demand pushed container throughput at the Port of Long Beach to 914,000 TEU in August, the highest in its 113-year history. At the same time, the throughput in September was 829,000 TEU, 70TEU higher than September 2023. It was also the busiest quarter on record for the Port of Long Beach. Among them, imported heavy containers increased by 2.0% year-on-year to 417,000 TEU, while exported heavy containers decreased by 12.8% year-on-year to 88,000 TEU. In addition, the number of empty containers passing through the Port of Long Beach increased 1.5% to 324,000 TEU.

 

The Port of Long Beach said cargo volumes surged to its busiest quarter on record during the shipping season, as consumer demand continued to drive trade and shippers moved goods ahead of the strike at the East and Gulf ports.

In the first nine months of 2024, container throughput at the Port of Long Beach reached 6.917 million TEU, an increase of 18.8% over the same period last year.

 

Mario Cordero, Chief Executive Officer of the Port of Long Beach, said: "The peak shipping season has driven the Port of Long Beach to record volumes and we have plenty of room at our terminals. Growth is expected to continue for the rest of the year as retailers stock up for the winter holidays."
