Yangming Shipping announces New Capacity Expansion Plan!

Yangming Shipping announces New Capacity Expansion Plan!

Recently, Yangming Shipping announced that it plans to optimize its fleet by adding 13 container ships ranging from 8,000 TEU to 15,000 TEU.

Specifically, in order to ensure sustainable business growth in the medium and long term, Yangming Marine plans to replace container ships older than 20 years with a capacity of 5,500 TEU to 6,500 TEU, and strengthen the operational advantages of major routes.

Yangming Shipping said that it is committed to providing comprehensive and efficient global transportation services, continuously optimizing its service network and improving the competitiveness of its fleet. In addition, it will comprehensively evaluate the development of energy-saving technologies, adopt clean energy to address challenges such as climate change, and aim to gradually reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance corporate resilience, and provide more environmentally friendly transportation solutions for customers around the world.

In addition to the newly announced fleet optimization plan, in order to increase capacity, Yangming Shipping also issued a container ship leasing announcement in November 2024, involving a total of 25 vessels, with a total rental of 31.27 billion to 40.87 billion New Taiwan dollars (about 980 million to 1.28 billion US dollars). It is reported that the owners of these vessels include Seaspan (Seaspan), GC Intermodal and others.

In September 2024, Yangming Shipping, Ocean Network Alliance Shipping (ONE) and HMM jointly announced that they would continue to deepen alliance cooperation and establish a new alliance Premier Alliance in response to Hapag-Lloyd's withdrawal from THE Alliance.

But the scale of the capacity of Premier Alliance is clearly difficult to compete with other alliances. In the above context, some industry analysts believe that Yangming Shipping has massively increased its capacity, and may also consider expanding the capacity of the alliance.

As of December 23, 2024, Yangming Shipping had an operating capacity of 97 vessels and 705,505TEU, ranking tenth in the world. Of these, there are 59 owned capacity of 323,782TEU and 38 leased capacity of 381,723TEU. In addition, it has an order capacity of five vessels with 77,500TEU.
