1.72 million TEU! U.S. imports hit a record in November, and Asian trade rebounded strongly

 

According to data from Descartes Datamyne based on US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) statistics, US container imports from the top 10 Asian economies reached 1.72 million TEU in November, up 15.3% year on year and a record high for November.

 

Import trends and main sources

Although November imports fell 6.6 percent month-on-month from October, cumulative imports for the January-November period this year have reached 18.59 million TEU, up 16.4 percent from the same period last year and close to the record for the same period in 2021. Overall U.S. imports in November were 2.39 million TEU, up 14.3 percent from a year earlier.

 

Main import source countries and regions:

China: 983,573 TEU (+15.8%)

South Korea: 193,858 TEU (+10.9%)

Vietnam: 177,978 TEU (+20.5%)

India: 81,384 TEU (+29.5%)

Taiwan: 76,978 TEU (+19.3%)

Japan (8th) : 37,216 TEU (+6.5%)

 

 

Export performance to Asia

 

U.S. exports to the 10 largest Asian economies totaled 464,131 TEU in October, down 2.1 percent month-on-month and down 0.3 percent year-over-year. Major export destinations include:

China: 105,746 TEU (-22.1%)

South Korea: 65,203 TEU (+36.6%)

Vietnam: 49,748 TEU (+22.2%)

Indonesia: 48,792 TEU (+12.1%)

Japan: 47,374 TEU (-2.3%)

 

The data reflect that US-Asia trade continues to maintain strong growth momentum, with imports reaching a new high in November, but with significant month-to-month volatility. As economic activity picks up, demand for U.S. imports from Asia continues to grow, bringing new vitality to global supply chains.
