The Port of Los Angeles handled a record number of containers in July as US retailers stocked up ahead of the year-end shopping season. In July, the Port of Los Angeles handled 936,000 TEUs of containers, up 37% from a year earlier.

Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, said that toys, clothing, electronics and other goods are arriving early, importers in order to deal with the Red Sea merchant vessel rerouted, East Coast and Gulf of Mexico ports in October possible strikes, new tariffs and so on, in advance of stockpiling, making the shipping season ahead. The Port of Los Angeles handled 323,000 TEUs of empty containers in July, up 54 percent from a year earlier, and Seroka said the fact that so many empty containers were being sent back to Asia is a sign that more cargo is coming.

The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), which represents port workers on the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico, is preparing to strike if a new contract is not reached. Talks between the ILA and the United States Maritime Union (USMX), which focus on automation technology and wage increases, have stalled.

In the first seven months of 2024, the United States imported 15.6 percent more containers than in the same period of 2019. In July alone, the volume of imported containers in the United States increased by 11.2% month on month, by 16.8% year on year, and by 16.3% compared with 2019, reaching 2,556,200 TEU. Among them, US imports from China reached 1,022,900 TEUs, a record high.
